Dorothy Ruth Oaks, 86, of Monmouth, died 7:51 A.M. Friday, October 4, 2013 at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.
She was born December 3, 1926 in Mercer County, Illinois, the daughter of Ira B. and Ruth (Moberg) Smith. She was raised and educated in Mercer County, where she graduated from Alexis High School. She graduated from Monmouth College with a B.S. Degree in Music Education in 1947.
Dorothy married J. Edgar Oaks near Burgess, Illinois on February 21, 1948 and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1996.
She taught music in the Yorkwood School District for many years, and taught private piano lessons in her home. She enjoyed sharing her love of music with others.
She was a member of the Little Cedar Presbyterian Church in Little York, P.E.O. Chapter T, and Alpha Xi Delta Alumni.
Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Janet Baum of Ozark, Missouri, and Kathy Carson of Monmouth, one son, Jim (Dorothy) Oaks of Monmouth, nine grandchildren, Paul (Allicia) Baum, Mary Baum, Joel (Cindy) Baum, Jonathan (Sarah) Carson, Jessica (Brian) Caslin, Jenna (Rob) Purlee, Laura (Isaac) Smith, Josh (Mishelle) Oaks and Ashley (Rick) Leonard, and fifteen great grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, John Smith and Ira Smith and one grandson.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth with Pastor David Dutton of the Little Cedar Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth. Friends may call on Monday, October 7, 2013 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth where her family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
