John D. Burks

John D. Burks, 80 of Monmouth, IL passed away Thursday July 28, 2016, 9:25 a.m. at his home. He was born Thursday December 5, 1935 in Aurora, IL the son of William Robert and Elnora (Pearce) Burks. He married Donna Buri on June 7, 1958 in Aurora, IL.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Donna Burks of Monmouth, IL; Children Mary (Randy) Mowen of Monmouth, IL, John (Robin) Burks of Cottage Grove, MN, Tony (Teresa) Burks of Hinckley, IL, Nancy (Brian) Mowen of Roseville, IL, James Burks of Ettrick, WI, and Julie (Adam) Johnson of Eau Claire, WI; Grandchildren Tracey, Randy, Joe, Brad, Lauren, Amanda, Jonathan, Sarah, Jamie, Kyle, Zack, Aaron, Chris, Craig, Zeb, Alexia, Cory; 26 great grandchildren; siblings Hazel Smith, Nancy Schuler, James (Judy) Burks, William (Carol) Burks, Marjorie (Dick) Zeiter, and Elnora Schuler, as well as his sister-in-laws Audry Burks, Judie Burks and Janice Burks. He was preceded in death by his parents, son (Joseph), siblings (Gerald Burks, Barbara Burks, Helen Markham, Donald Burks and Robert Burks) brother-in-laws (Tom Schuler, Ken Schuler, Dan Smith and Percy Markham).

John worked in construction and was an entrepreneur. He was in the Marine Corps from 1954-1956. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who thoroughly enjoyed each of his grandchildren. He also loved meeting new people and learning more about their lives. One of his favorite things to do was to take trips to enjoy the beauty of God's country. His family had such good times on outings with the kids when they were growing up. He loved the back roads. He lived simply; rich with gratitude!

Memorial Service will be Monday August 1, 2016, 3:00 p.m. with a visitation two hours prior at the Wise Family-Hoover Hall Funeral Home Monmouth, IL. Memorials may be made to the OSF Hospice, Hinckley Public Library, Hinckley, IL, and/or the Hague Public Library, Osseo, WI. Please sign the online guestbook at www.wisefamily-hooverhall.com.
