Leitha Faye (Hendel) Lock

Leitha Faye Hendel Lock, 92, of Avon, IL passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018, 8:15 p.m. at the Heartland Healthcare Center Galesburg, IL.  She was born Friday, August 13, 1926 in Greenbush Township (Warren County), IL the daughter of Jay and Sadie (Kreps) Hendel.  She married Dean Lock on May 5, 1945 in Avon, IL.

She is survived by her husband  Dean of Galesburg, IL; daughters Nancy Leighty of Waterbury, CT, and Jane Hood of Kewanee, IL; son Richard (Cindy) Lock of Avon, IL; grandchildren Gretch Vecellio of Yale, OK, Lauren Hood of Bloomington, IL, David Hood of Kewanee, IL, Michael Lock of Avon, IL, Hanna (Cory) Hemer of East Galesburg, IL, Kevin Lock of Avon, IL, Mathew Lock of Avon, IL; and 3 great grandsons.  Also extended family Ken (Cheryl) Kestner, Teri Kestner and Kristen VanHoosen; brothers Jim (Clarice) Hendel of Roseville, IL, Larry (Kay) Hendel of TX, and Joe (Markay) Hendel of Avon, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister (Dale), and daughter (Jill).

Leitha lived a life of giving to others.  She taught three years in a country school and working in the Avon Nursing Home as an LPN and Activity director for 20 years.  In the early 1960’s she attended the first LPN class in Galesburg.  She was a lifelong member of the Avon Methodist Church and served on several committees, also serving many dinners. She enjoyed crafts, making Christmas ornaments and she made many quilts.  She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandkids and great grandkids.

Funeral service will be Monday, October 29, 2018 11:00 a.m. at the Avon Methodist Church Avon, IL. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 am at the church.  Burial will be in the Avon Cemetery Avon, IL.  Memorials may be made to the Avon United Methodist Church and or the Illinois State Library Talking Books and Braille.  Please sign the online guestbook at www.wisefamilyfuneralhome.com.  Wise Family Funeral Home Avon, IL is in charge of the arrangements.
