Marcena M. Smallwood, 95, of Alexis, died 5:15 P.M. Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at her home.
She was born April 15, 1917 at home in Suez Township, Mercer County to Bert Ennis and Myrtle Mae (Butler) Hill. She attended Center School in Mercer Co and attended Monmouth High School before transferring to Alexis High School where she graduated in 1934. She then attended Monmouth College, graduating in 1938. She was affiliated with Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.
Marcena married Harold Smallwood on the family farm near Alexis on June 17, 1938 and he died Oct. 13, 2006.
Marcena and Harold lived in Monmouth, Norwood and the Alexis area where they farmed. In 1956 Marcena returned to Monmouth College to get a degree in education and started her career as a teacher. She then attended Western Illinois University to get certified in Special education and Learning Disabilities. She taught Special Education in the Aledo School District for 34 years.
She was a member of the Norwood Presbyterian Church and the Womans Organizations.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary K. (Don) Johnson-Degen of Angels Camp, CA.; two sons, Roger Smallwood and R. Lane (Kay) Smallwood both of Alexis; 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 daughters in law, Barbara Elaine Smallwood and Sandra M. Smallwood; one son in law, Gary L. Johnson.
Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Norwood Presbyterian Church. Cremation has been accorded. Friends may call at the church where the family will be present one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be given to the Norwood Presbyterian Church.
