Melba D. Hughes-Collins, 95, of Monmouth died at 10:50 P.M. Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Monmouth Nursing Home.
She was born March 30, 1916 in Ft. Madison, Iowa the daughter of William Robert and Tempe Angelina "Lina" (Walker) Stewart. She was raised and educated in Ft. Madison and in Missouri.
Melba married William Hughes in Carthage, IL on October 11, 1931 and he died November 7, 1969. She later married Kenneth Collins in Reno, NV on Aug. 8, 1978 and he died September 4, 1991.
Melba was a homemaker. She also owned and operated the Little York CafAC. in Little York for 8 Years. Bill and Melba also owned and operated a poultry business in Little York for several years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and playing cards.
She was a member of the former Little York Methodist Church and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth. She was a member of the Burlington Moose Club. Melba served as the Little York City Clerk and Precinct Committeewoman. She was very active in local politics.
Survivors include her 6 daughters, Gwen (Robert) Farm of Alexis, Joyce (Leroy) Lantz of Monmouth, Paula (Ed) Endicott of Monmouth, Tjodie (Ed) House of Monmouth, Mary (David) Lee of Monmouth and Angie (David) Fullerton of Lake Mary, Florida; daughter in law, Romona Hughes of Monmouth; 28 grandchildren, 60 Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren; brother, Robert (Dorothy) Stewart of North Carolina; 3 sisters, Vivian Howard of Kansas City, Mo, Betty Simpson of Raytown, MO. and Cleta (Archie) Rinaldo of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews; special friend, John Roodhouse of Monmouth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands; one son, William Hughes; one daughter, Kay Todd; 3 brothers, James Stewart, Calvin Stewart and David L. Stewart; 2 sisters, Frances Kelley and Lola Fullencamp.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Sat. March 31, 2012 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday morning where her family will be present from 9:00-11:00 A.M. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
