Merle Elizabeth Henning

Merle Elizabeth Henning, 91, a longtime resident of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday August 23, 2016 at the age of 91, at OSF St. Mary's Medical Center Galesburg, IL. She was born Monday February 2, 1925, the daughter of Thurlow and Jettie (Dale) Silkwood, she was born and raised in Bardley, MO, growing up with her six sisters and three brothers. Merle was married to Leo Edward Henning for 62 years. She fell in love with him because of his wild blue eyes. As a military wife, she traveled the world with Leo and her son and daughter, living in France, Japan, Germany, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois. The stories she told about these places are priceless memories. The pictures are even more unbelievable.

Merle was a real estate broker for 47 years. Beginning at the Manhard Real Estate Agency, she went on to own her own companies, first Fairway Realtors, and eventually owning her own Century 21 franchise in Rock Island. She was passionate about her career and selling real estate. She was a hard worker and never wanted to slow down.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Judith Elizabeth Nally of Alexis, IL and son, Jerry Henning of Colorado Springs, CO; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Throughout her life, she was an active member in the Church of Christ in Rock Island and Moline. She supported Right to Life through volunteer work. She loved music and jamming with her friends playing bluegrass music. She also loved horseback riding, vacationing in the RV and spending time with family. She will be extremely missed.

Funeral service will be Friday, August 26, 2016, 3:00 p.m. at the Moline Church of Christ, 4800 38th Ave. Burial will be for the immediate family at a later date at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.
