Ronald E. Powell

Ronald E. Powell, 76, of Alexis, IL died at 7:48 P.M. Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg.

He was born May 7, 1935 in Avon, Illinois the son of Corliss and Marvel (Staggs) Powell. He was raised and educated in Avon, graduating from Avon High School in 1953. He worked at the Stockyards in Peoria until he decided to return to college and graduated from Western Illinois University in 1964. He later received his Masters of Science degree from Western Illinois University in 1973.

Ronald married Alberta Marie Wallis on Feb. 19, 1957 in Avon and she survives.

Ronald started teaching Industrial Arts and coaching at Alexis High School in 1964. He was the head basketball coach for 13 seasons, head track coach for 22 seasons, assistant football coach for 25 seasons, and Athletic Director for 23 years before retiring in 1993.

He was active in the Alexis Fire Department for 20 years and served as a Trustee for 18 years. Ron loved his grandchildren and his life long love of working with livestock.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; 4 children, Kurt (Pam) Powell of Auburn, IL, Kraig (Lisa) Powell of Gerlaw, IL, Kelly (Rhonda) Powell of LeSueur, MN and Kristine (Roger) Keeney of Alexis; 10 grandchildren; sister, Bobbi Ann Carrico of Champaign, IL; sister in law, Holly Powell of Avon; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Terry Powell.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, May 7, 2012 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis with Sue Shike officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 P.M. Monday at the Avon Cemetery. Friends may call after 12:00 Noon on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis where his family will be present from 1:00-3:00 P.M.
