Ruby Lucille Johnson, 102, of Stronghurst, IL passed away Monday September 18, 2017, 2:11 am at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab Center Stronghurst, IL. She was born on Saturday February 13, 1915 in Biggsville, IL the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Knutstrom) Swedlund. Ruby was raised and educated in the Biggsville area, where she attended Coloma Grade School and graduated from Biggsville High School in 1933. She received her teaching certificate from Western Illinois Teachers College in Macomb, IL.
She married Eldon A. Johnson in Burlington, IA on November 25, 1939, he preceded her in death on April 28, 1990.
Ruby taught at Bedford Grade School Rural Stronghurst, IL for eight years. She enjoyed being a farm wife and working alongside her husband to make the farming operation a success. She enjoyed flowers, crocheting and making sequin calendars. She also kept a diary and enjoyed writing letters to her former students.
She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years.
Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Joanne (John) Peterson of Moline, IL; one son, Larry Johnson of Monmouth, IL; 3 granddaughters, Lisa (Kevin) Gorgal of Moline, IL, Mindy (Mike) Meyers of Silvis, IL, and Ashley (Matthew) Williams of Wagga Wagga, Australia; 5 great grandchildren, Bailey and Bennett Gorgal, Riley and Brody Meyers, Dixie Williams; 5 nieces, Trudy (Phil) Bergren of Monmouth, IL, Carol (Bill) Clark of Oquawka, IL, Marjorie (Ralph) Butler of Monmouth, IL, Elaine Wilson and Marsha Bagley of Wisconsin; 5 nephews, Royce (Joyce) Headley of Macomb, IL, Charles (Carol) Headley of Columbia, MO, Leon (Carol) Johnson and Ronnie Johnson both of Stronghurst, IL and Charles (Frances) Swedlund of Cobden, IL, along with several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sons-in-law (Ric Johns and Joe Cravero) and 1 sister (Mildred Hale).
Funeral service will be Friday September 22, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst, IL. Visitation will be Thursday September 21, 2017, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Wise Family-Hoover Hall Funeral Home Monmouth, IL and at the Church in Stronghurst one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery Monmouth, IL. Memorials may be made to the Bethel Lutheran Church. Please sign the online guestbook at www.wisefamilyfuneralhome.com.
